The beauty of the countryside and scenes from everyday farm life have been
favourite subjects of Doug's paintings for more than thirty years. Raised on a
farm near Norwood, he was encouraged to paint by his mother, who is also a
painter. He pursued art at Crestwood Secondary School, in Peterborough, studying
under Roberta "Bobby" Rowland-Patterson, Bill McKnight and Neil Broadfoot. He
then studied drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto.
Doug was elected into the membership of the Society
of Canadian Artists in 2006. In May of 2007 his painting,
Any Day Now, received the Antoinette
"Toni" Stevens Award for "Best in Show" during the SCA Elected Members
Juried Show "A Sense of Place" at the Leighton Centre near Calgary. In
2005, Doug's painting Three Sisters
received the Judges' Choice - Best in Show Award at the East Central Ontario
Art Association Exhibition in Minden. In October, the same painting was
accepted in the Society of Canadian Artists Annual Juried Exhibition, in
Toronto. In 2000, his painting, Indian
Summer, was accepted and sold in the Federation of Canadian Artist's "Aim
For Arts" international, juried exhibition in Vancouver. In 1999, his painting
Ouse River Morning received the Don Maddocks
Award at the East Central Ontario Art Association's annual show. He has
participated in other juried exhibitions including the Uxbridge Festival of the
Arts, Spirit of the Hills (Northumberland Art Association) and Art & Healing at
the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Aunt
Daisy, his playful painting of a family of goats received "Best
Painting/Drawing" at the 10th Annual Spirit of the Hills Juried Exhibition
in March of 2010.
In 1998, Doug held his first solo exhibition in the
newly-opened gallery in his home at Cottesloe. The
Gallery at Ander-Vale is located in a gracious Victorian farmhouse
surrounded by gardens, ponds an orchard and the barnyard. Visitors are welcome
to explore gardens filled with old-fashioned
perennials, roses and a great variety of trees and shrubs.

"An artist, farmer and gardener, I have always
revelled in the bountiful colour and compelling designs of the world around me.
I use oils, watercolours, pastels to capture landscapes, animals and
flowers in intricate detail. I hope that, through my paintings, you too will
find peace and joy in the beauty of nature."
